Its composition and labeled use are defined by its prescription drug label.
Not a research compound. Its composition and labeled use are defined by its prescription drug label. Safety knowledge about its preservative, benzyl alcohol, includes a 1982 CDC report linking benzyl-alcohol–preserved flush solutions to deaths in premature infants.
Limitations
- The label states that, because of benzyl alcohol toxicity in neonates, solutions containing benzyl alcohol must not be used in newborns
- In 1982 CDC reported 16 premature-infant deaths associated with benzyl-alcohol–preserved flush solutions; FDA then advised against their use in newborns
- The label warns that intravenous administration without a dissolved drug may cause hemolysis
- Pharmaceutical versions are prescription-only (Rx) products
