MT-2 (melanotan II) is a synthetic cyclic peptide of seven amino acids modeled on alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), the body's own signal for skin pigmentation. It activates several melanocortin receptors rather than one.
It has never been approved as a medicine anywhere. It is often confused with afamelanotide, a different, linear α-MSH analog that is authorised in the EU for a rare light-sensitivity disorder.
Melanotan II is of research interest as a tool for studying the melanocortin system, which links skin pigmentation, appetite and sexual function through receptors MC1R to MC5R.
Because it acts on several of these receptors at once, it has also been studied as a reference compound; bremelanotide (PT-141) was developed from the same structure.
